Cuyahoga Heights Elementary School fifth-grade gifted students combined creativity, literacy, and critical thinking in a Halloween-themed project that brought their favorite book characters to life.
Students transformed ordinary pumpkins into colorful representations of characters from their favorite books. They then took their creativity a step further by writing original stories that imagined their characters embarking on Halloween adventures.
Beyond the artistic and creative writing components, students explored the author’s purpose and analyzed character development throughout a story. The hands-on project encouraged students to apply their understanding of literature while strengthening reading comprehension, creative writing, and analytical thinking skills.
The project also featured a pumpkin decorating contest, with three students earning top honors for their creative designs:
First Place: Austin Henry, SpongeBob SquarePants

Second Place: Quinn Zahand, Coraline

Third Place: Vera Prause, Dobby

The activity gave students a fun, engaging way to connect reading, writing, and art while demonstrating their understanding of literary concepts.
